On August 9, 2024, a massive explosion occurred at the Ningbo-Zhoushan Port, one of the busiest ports in the world. The explosion took place on the container ship YM Mobility, operated by Taiwan’s Yang Ming Marine Transport Corp., while the ship was docked at the Beilun terminal of the Ningbo port.
The explosion was caused by a container holding hazardous materials, including lithium batteries. This container had been declared as a refrigerated unit but was not connected to a power source during transshipment, which may have contributed to the explosion. Additionally, the hot weather in Ningbo at the time is also being considered as a potential factor.
The explosion resulted in a fire and sent plumes of black smoke into the sky, causing significant damage to the port and impacting nearby shipping operations. Ships docked at Ningbo-Zhoushan were forced to delay their departures as authorities conducted a thorough investigation into the explosion’s cause and ensured the port’s safety before allowing other vessels to continue their journeys.
Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries or fatalities, and all 20 crew members were safely evacuated. The situation was quickly brought under control. However, the incident has raised concerns within the maritime industry, particularly regarding the safety of transporting hazardous materials by sea. An investigation is currently underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion.

Moreover, this incident has caused the schedule of containers 2411 and 2412, destined for Los Angeles, to be delayed by approximately one week, impacting the regional shipping network.
This event serves as a critical reminder of the importance of strict safety measures in the transport of high-risk goods by sea, to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
