2024 Thailand’s New Furniture Export Regulations

Thailand’s wooden furniture industry has long been a key player in the export sector. Thanks to its distinctive designs and high-quality materials, Thai wooden furniture is now internationally acclaimed.

However, 2024 brings new challenges. The wooden furniture exports from Thailand are now navigating through the latest regulatory changes enforced since 2023. These changes were introduced by the Thai Ministry of Commerce and the Royal Forest Department. These revisions have significantly impacted the manufacturers and exporters of wooden furniture in various aspects, including the new requirements for export licensing and product certifications.

Recent Regulatory Updates

In 2023, the Ministry of Commerce implemented new practices for exporting wood-based products.

Key points include:
Certain wood types, like teak, logs, processed wood, and specific veneers, now require an export permit.
Wood crafts and charcoal need to have export certifications.

Rescinding Previous Rules: The Ministry revoked previous regulations concerning charcoal exports and the necessity for wood export permits.

Detailed Specifications: The term “wood crafts” has been defined to encompass a wide range of products such as cabinets, tables, beds, chairs, doors, windows, frames, moldings, pre-made wooden buildings, particle boards, laminated woods, fiberboard, plywood, veneer, and similar materials.

Exceptions: There are exemptions for items carried for personal use, research samples, or those exported alongside vehicles, including the export of rubber wood.

Exporters are now required to adhere to the Forestry Department’s guidelines concerning the certification of wood, wooden products, and charcoal intended for export, as established in 2023.

The year 2024 marks a period of adaptation for Thailand’s wooden furniture industry due to these regulatory shifts. Exporters need to strategically plan their permit applications to bypass potential inspection hurdles and additional costs. Producers are also urged to align with these new standards, emphasizing quality certification and sustainable management of wood resources.

Moreover, this transition offers an opportunity to further refine the quality and sustainability of production processes, bolstering the global reputation and attractiveness of Thai wooden products.
